Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition written by Bill Oldfield about memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

Bill Oldfield was a baby at the time of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. He was asleep in his pram, which was rolling towards the edge of the balcony until it was grabbed by his mother, Ethel Agnes Oldfield. Bill enjoys telling his grandchildren this story. His father Brin Oldfield was employed clearing up after the earthquake. He had previously been unemployed because of the depression. Brin started a business, Oldfield Asphalts, that continues still.
