Brief Description
Entry to the Be Our Guest competition by W R Hay. Hay writes about memories of the Hawke's Bay earthquake of 3 February 1931.

The text describes facts relating to St Paul's Presbyterian Church. This includes: W R Hay attended a service with his/her parents at St Paul's Presbyterian Church on the Sunday before the earthquake. The minister, Reverend J A Asher, showed them the nearly completed church. The previous church had burned down in 1929. The new church was subsequently destroyed in the fire that followed the earthquake. The copper covering the steeple melted in the fire and was later stolen. One of the builders was Jack Ennor who was working for the contractors Walker and McBeath of Napier. He rode out the earthquake while working on the steeple. Mr Asher delayed his retirement for some time, until he was 70 years old.
