Brief Description
Letter and photograph to the Be Our Guest competition from Jean Ross McKenzie about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

a) Letter written by Jean Ross McKenzie, circa 2005. Jean's family lived on a sheep station in Hawke's Bay, of which her father was the manager. Her father was on a horse at the time of the quake and it wasn't until he got off that he realised there was an earthquake. Jean, her mother and brother were inside at the time but managed to get out of the house. The family slept in Army tents for two or three nights before being evacuated to stay with relatives in Wellington. Jean and her brother went to Roseneath School.

b) Photograph of Jean and her brother Jock taken shortly after the earthquake.
