Object detail

Brief Description
Letter and photograph to the Be Our Guest competition from Trevor Crabtree about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

a) Letter by Trevor Crabtree, circa 2005, in which he writes about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake in an essay entitled: Art Deco Trust Quake Memories. Trevor was one of twins of Mr and Mrs Harry Aubrey Crabtree and was born at what was then 28 Marine Parade in Napier. Harry Crabtree was a showman/contractor. He and his wife had eight children including the twins Trevor and Vernon. Following the earthquake the family took their possessions to the beach, including their piano. Trevor's brother Keith later worked for Becks the chemist which may have been the source for the family's album of earthquake photos. Trevor's sister Valmai Single (Crabtree) is the custodian of much of the family history and has also written an account of her experience during the earthquake for the Be Our Guest competition.

b) Photograph of Trevor and Vernon Crabtree wearing fireman helmets salvaged from the wreckage.
