Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition from Audrey Ford (nee Stace) about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, titled: Recollections of the Napier/Hastings earthquake in 1931.

Audrey was at home with her mother when the earthquake struck. Her father was at work at the Automobile Association, and her two elder sisters were at Hastings Central School. One of her sisters was injured at school. The family lived outside in their backyard, along with other families, until Audrey, her mother and sisters were evacuated to stay with a family in Woodville. Her sisters attended school there. On their return to Napier they stayed at the Westshore camping ground. A local doll shop in Hastings offered the girls any doll they wished to choose, at no cost. Audrey remembers this as being a wonderful thing to do as it was depression times and to have a new doll of her own was a miracle.
