a) Letter written by Jean Brown. Jean was five and a half at the time of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. She lived with her parents and brothers (Allan, Max and Colin) in Gebbie Road, Taradale. Her father, Lindsay Gordon, was a bus driver doing the Taradale to Napier run. She and her brothers were at Taradale Primary School when the quake struck. Jean remembers older children taking younger children home. Jean and her mother and brothers were evacuated to Feilding by train. They returned home after two weeks and slept in tents on the lawn.
