Letter to the Be Our Guest competition by Ron MacDiarmid. He writes about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
Ron was at school in Taihape at the time of the earthquake and remembers watching a tall chimney sway but not topple down. He does not think anyone was injured in Taihape, but the aftershocks went on for weeks.
