Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition from Barbara Skinner about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

Barbara was five years old at the time, and lived with her family near Fernhill. She was leading a horse down their drive when she heard a cowboy yelling at her, so she let go of the horse, and ran towards the eighteen year old, who lifted her up off the ground. Her family slept on the verandah that night, with people putting their feet on the ground with every aftershock to see if they needed to run. A bricklayer came from Otaki to mend their chimneys, and was on the roof when an aftershock occurred. At the back of their farm the side of the riverbank had collapsed into the Ngaruroro River below.
