Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition by Peggy Long (nee Stace). She writes about memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Titled: The Day the Fence Fell Over, subtitled: A Recount of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake told by Peggy Long (nee Stace) to 8-9 year old students at Waiouru Primary (2001). Peggy lived in Hastings at the time of the earthquake and was seven and a half years old. Her little sister was six years old. All the children in the playground ran and held onto the fence when the earthquake struck and it fell over with weight of all the children. Peggy thinks it must have been corrugated iron. Peggy went to find her sister, and their mother arrived soon after with their younger sister. Her father arrived in his work car and they went to Peggy's Nana's place on the other side of town. It took a long time. They slept in tents on spare land along with many others. There was no water because the pipes were broken. Their mothers had to cook outside. Peggy and her sisters and mother were evacuated while her father stayed behind to clear up. Peggy's school in Hastings was used for emergency work for some time after the earthquake.
