Object detail
Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition by Lorna Still (nee Thomas). She writes about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
Lorna was in Standard Four at Central School in Napier. She was with other girls on a lawn when the earthquake struck. There was a roar and the girls were tossed to the ground. Lorna writes that the ground came in waves. After the quake Lorna could see that a wall had come down. They saw a woman with an injury to her face. Lorna found her sister and they went home. Their mother ran to meet them. They camped that night at Napier Girls' High School on flat land across the road. Parents arrived all night to collect their daughters.
Lorna's extract states that the sailors brought a ration of chocolate creams from the town factory and she asks: Whatever would Hawke's Bay have done without the sailors? They were evacuated to Palmerston North and billeted with the Hadfields in Terrace End. Later, they went to Blenheim. Lorna has also written a note about the Centennial magazine of Napier Central School (page 17) where there is a photo of her with other girls: Lola Sporle, Lorna Thomas, Barbara Fleming and Olive Jones. She says it was probably taken in December 1930. Along with Lorna's account are photocopies of three photos.
