Brief Description
Poem sent to the Be Our Guest competition by Phyllis Gudgeon. She writes about her mother's experience of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

The poem was written by Phyllis in March 2001, soon after the 70th anniversary of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake and is titled: Magnatude (sic) 7.8 on the Richter Scale. It is based on the experience of her mother Mrs Ida Annie Baker (nee McInnes). Her mother was in Form Four at Napier Girls' High School and was evacuated to family in Woodville. She later continued her schooling as a boarder at Wanganui Girls' College. At age 83 Ida returned to live in Napier.
