Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition from James Garrett about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. James sent in a draft excerpt from his autobiography entitled: A Garrett in the Attic. It concerns his life in Blyth, Durham, and immigration to New Zealand in 1927-28. The family settled in Napier and were living at 10 Thistle Street, Napier South, at the time of the earthquake. James was at Nelson Park School. The first night the family spent on top of the hill in Guys Hill Road to escape the tidal wave that they were told would come. James, his mother Susan and his two younger brothers Dennis and Eric, were evacuated to Palmerston North by train where they stayed for six weeks until their house was repaired. They lived under the Grandstand at the Showgrounds where James says stock car races were still held. His account includes many photocopies of photographs and extracts from books, and is spiral bound.
