Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition written by Douglas Monzari, Yvonne Abbey (nee Monzari) and Lois Neale (nee Monzari). They write about their memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

Douglas and Yvonne Monzari were at Napier Central School on 3 February 1931. Douglas was seven and Yvonne five and their sister Lois was four. They lived in Milton Road near the corner of Burlington Road. Also at Napier Central School were their aunt and uncle Jack and Nancy. After the earthquake they all walked to their family's house down Burlington Road until they were intercepted by their uncle Bill who took them to their grandparents house at 55 Milton Road.

They also had another uncle, Sam, who was at Napier Technical School. Lois had taken her younger brother Tom to see the chickens at a neighbour's place when the earthquake struck. Lois's mother Violet McMullen had to come and find them. Their concrete block house partially collapsed during the earthquake. The whole family gathered at their grandparents house and lived in a large tent set up on the lawn. Water was distributed from a truck with a tank on the back which went around the streets. A few days after the earthquake women and children were evacuated to Gisborne on a coastal ship.
