Brief Description
Plan, Wai Estate. 1908.
Sketch plan of Wai Estate, 1908. To be auctioned by C B Hoadley & Co, Wednesday, March 11, 1908 at 2.p.m. 3182 acres. 10 Township allotments. The map shows the Nuhaka River, Nuhaka Township, dairy factory. The property is situated at Nuhaka and lies on the main coach road between Wairoa and Gisborne, and about 3 miles from the Waikokopu Harbour, where steamers call. The formation consists of low hills and rich flats equal to the Heretaunga Plains. All cleared, grassed, well watered by permanent streams and ready for immediate occupation. The property has been laid off into allotments to suit the requirements of the settlers in the district, who have already made Nuhaka an important centre of the dairying industry, while for climate, stock-raising and fattening no better country can be found on the Coast. Nancy Lyon's father Alexander Mackay, managed the Wai Station for 44 years, 1939-1983. The owner was C W Reeves and his left it to his two nephews Harold Maud and another brother who died who in turn left it to his son Simon Maud. Nancy grew up on the station and attended Nuhaka Public School and then Iona.
