Included with the copies of the letters are information about the family and a family tree created by the donor. The letters were written by the descendents of John and Mary Sutherland. John and Mary Sutherland sailed on the Oriental to New Zealand and arrived in Wellington on 31 January 1840. They farmed at Mataikuna Castlepoint and both died there in December 1875. They were both buried on the property.
