Brief Description
Letter from Ches Monsieur Merillon, ... Banquier, France, to Douglas Maclean, Saturday night, undated.

It was written from someone staying in France, where they have been for 5 months.

The letter begins: My dear friend.

The author talks about attending a concert of violin and violin cello with Miss Langham as singing accompaniment, who has a fine and modulated voice, although highish. A Miss Senior is also mentioned as looking after her sisters health. It mentions the letter received from Scotland. The writer mentions a charming O'Shea couple, whose life seems perfect and happy, and they are devoted to each other. The writer wishes to live such a life, but says: I care for noone who would make me happy.

The writer mentions hearing Mrs Tollecmache play the violin, the daughter of old Egerton of Satton's. The author writes of a woman causing jealousy between two men, and cannot understand how girls can delight in giving pain to men, interpreted as paying them off in their own coin, flirting with two men and meaning to marry neither, but also admitting that he is a quiet outsider. Three or four men and ladies will visit to say goodbye to the writer the next day, including a consumptive youth. The youth was left by his sister, and when the writer took the youth up it was the fashion to do so, but does not think the boy will live long, having no servant or anyone to watch him. The writer notes there are several in the same state, and that life is very bitter to bear sometimes. He writes of the beautiful sermons at the Jesuit Church, Farm Street, Berkley every Friday at 3. The writing is scrawled and in places difficult to read, and the order of the letter hard to follow.

The letter is handwritten in black ink on two pieces of paper, folded.
