Object detail

Brief Description
Letter from Bethune & Hunter, to Donald McLean, Auckland, dated 21 May 1861.

The letter tells Donald McLean that they will send to him all accounts connected with the charter of the Margarethe Roesner, sales of his wool and general statements of accounts to date. The second shipment of sheep sent to Lyttleton from Napier were sold for a good price. The losses on the first voyage occurred when the sheep were landed and they rushed over a cliff. They say that they hired the most experienced person and agree that they could have shipped earlier in the year but that they didn't lose any time once they received his instructions. They hope that McLean will succeed at keeping peace in the North and note that nothing will be gained by war. The letter says that Mr Pharazyn has sent the accounts to Dr Featherston and that it appears that Donald McLean is indebted to the Station and that there is no money from there to pay Bethune & Hunter.
