Letter from Mrs C Fisher, to Douglas Maclean, dated 28 May 1877.
She is asking him to give her some cattle, in order to give her a start on the land and writes:
Dear Sir i persevered about getting some land i have got the use of 400 acres from Mr tookey as long as i want it but he can not seel it as it belongs to his son dear sir i dont mean to be a burden on you if you will give me some cattle to give me a start on the land i will for ever thank you and i hope the pleasure of knowing that you rescued the woman from poverty who nourished you at her breast for 18 months... Dear Douglas I have longed for to see you and was sorry to see you look so thin i hope you will take care of yourself you dont remember much of your childhood i will tell you how i came to be your Nurse i arrived in New Zeland in August 1852 i was marred to a sculpture in stone there was no stone work in Wellington on account of the earthquacks my husband went to Melbourn and left me in Wellington to send for me if he got work Mary was born 22 Oct you was born in Nov i was living close to your Grandfather house your father ask me to come to Nurse you with my own child for you was a delicate baby and no female relations in New Zeland when you was 3 months old i had a letter to go to Melbourne you father wished me to stay till you was 12 months old i consented i pityed you very much i heard no more from my husband for 9 months than i heard of his death i stayed with you 4 years i got married to my present husband much against your fathers wish he told me that he would do any thing he could for me if i wanted it he sent Mary to school for a year when she died i never ask him for help till he was last on the Thames then i thought of seeing him again i hope you wont think this letter tedious i must conclude with my love to you L fisher addres lucy ann fisher tararua creek thames.
