Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to George Preece, Resident Magistrate of Napier from W J Morpeth of the Native Office, Wellington.

W J Morpeth writes regarding a letter addressed to Captain Preece by Hapimana Tunupaura, dated 17 May 1883 objecting to the return of Te Waru and others to Te Wairoa. Toha and other Māori including Hapimana have also written that it is scarcely probable that Te Waru or his people will return to Te Wairoa, but that, if any of them should do so they would be under the protection of the law, as they and all others who committed offences arising out of the war have been pardoned by the general amnesty which has been proclaimed and that he and other Māori signing the letter must be careful not to commit a breach of the law.
