Brief Description
(a) Vaccination certificate for Mary Clarissa Masters which reads: To the Father, Mother, or other person having the care, nurture or custody of Mary Clarissa Masters. I hereby give you notice and require you to have the said child Vaccinated forthwith, and if you neglect for Six Months from the birth of such child so to do, you are liable to a penalty of 40s. Dated 18 May 1865. Signed by T W Downs, Registrar of Births for the Picton District.
(b) A letter written by Mrs Alice M Deans accompanies the certificate. It explains both the situation in which it was issued (compulsory vaccination) and also in which it was donated to the museum. It also notes that Mary was actually born 9 May 1865.
