A letter to Russ Spiller of Napier from William Clothier dated 25 May 2001. In the letter William writes about how much Napier has changed in the 60 years he has been away. William recalls how Russ Spiller's father heard William singing in the shower after a lunch-time swim and suggested he joined the Friv's (Napier Frivolity Minstrels) which William subsequently did and writes of having a marvellous time until the war. William recalls singing the first solo at the Friv's opening of the new theatre after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. William also writes that in 1945 while in Italy he met the manager of the La Scala opera house in Milan not knowing that 30 years later he would be singing there with Marybelle. William and Marybelle met in a Harry Secombe musical and married in 1959. William tells Russ Spiller what marvellous and wonderful times he has had with Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras and Joan Sutherland and that he has been lucky having a singing life of 40 years in the West End.
