Brief Description
Letter from Robert Kelly, Clerk of Court at Wairoa to George Preece, Resident Magistrate of Napier. This letter concerns enquiries made by Kelly as to the amount of whale oil obtained by local Māori from Mahia and Nuhaka.

They caught: 8 sperm whales averaging 3 tons of oil each realising £45 - 50 per ton; 20 grampus which the Natives call scumpertown, averaging 1 ton each and realising £30 - 35 per ton; 12 humpbacks averaging 2 1/2 tons realising £18 - 20 per ton.

These whales were caught at Mahia and the oil sold to Mr E B Bendall. The Natives at Nukutaurua only grow sufficient maize and potatoes for their own use - some 20 acres of corn and 30 of potatoes. The Nuhaka Natives grow between 30 - 35 acres of maize of which 150 bushels were sold to Mr E B Bendall at 3 shillings per bushel. They also grow 40 acres of potatoes and 2 acres of wheat. They sold a ship to G Richardson of Napier for £700.

This Courthouse document is numbered 99/83 with envelope number 10.
