Brief Description
The newspaper cutting: Story of heroism 100 years ago describes a journey from Auckland to Lake Taupo during the New Zealand wars, 1864.

Herbert Meade was one of the men in the Taupo party - he recorded a journal of his trip. There were two opposing factions, the Kingites and the Queenites. Meade records that a woman named Ahumai saved some early european settlers from execution.
