Brief Description
A one page leaflet written in Māori and printed on letterpress. The leaflet is a typographic specimen printed by Colenso for the consideration of the Church Missionary Society translation committee in respect of the proposed adoption of the letters wh in place of the letter w in the spelling of Māori words. There are four paragraphs, which contain a combination of normal text, text in capitals, then text in bold. The four paragraphs are to illustrate alternative spellings of the same phrase in Māori. The first paragraph has the original phrase: Whakawhiwhia ou minita ki te tikanga. Meinga tou hunga i whiriwhiri ai koe kia hari. The second paragraph replaces wh with a quote mark and w (e.g. `Waka`wi`wia ou). The third paragraph replaces wh with an apostrophe mark and w (e.g. ´Waka´wi´wia ou); and the fourth paragraph replaces wh with a v (e.g. Vakavivia ou).
An account of the whole dispute over the translation issue is given by William Colenso in the booklet: Fifty Years Ago in New Zealand, published in 1888.
