The author discusses conflict in the Hawke's Bay area during the 1857 - 1874 period; the formation of military groups; military posts at Taupo, Runanga, Te Haroto and Tarawera; the advance of the Pai Mārire and the action at Opepe Bush. On page two is a sketch map of Napier Harbour drawn about 1870. There is a typed sheet regarding a mistake in W Dinwiddie's booklet: Old Hawke's Bay, about the 70th Regiment, attached to page three.
