Brief Description
a) The Great Volcanic Outbreak at Tarawera, New Zealand, 10th June, 1886: Loss of over one hundred lives; Villages Overwhelmed; The Rotomahana Terraces Engulfed; Sixty Square Miles of Country in Eruption. This small book of 48 pages was printed and published in Napier by R Coupland Harding in 1886. It contains a summary of events, reports and accounts of the eruption on June 10th, 1886.

At the end of the book is a list of persons killed, total: 100.

On the back cover is a glossary for Māori words used in the book; a notice stating that photographs of the districts affected by the volcanic disturbances can be obtained from D N Adams, Hastings Street, Napier; a list of soon-to-be-published images of the eruption and the Pink and White Terraces as well as an advertisement for Harding's New Zealand Almanac and Year-Book.

b) Wairoa, the Destroyed Village, a poem by Noah and Caleb Wood, Rotorua, February, 1905. Printed by Chronicle Print, Rotorua.

c) Shocking Accident at Waimangu: a newspaper article reporting on the fatal eruption of the geyser on August 30, 1903. The article gives details of the catastrophe including the names of the four deceased and a description by an eye-witness.

d) A newspaper cutting dated 11 September 1925 reporting on the death of Amelia Haszard, survivor of the Tarawera Eruption.

e) A newspaper cutting from 1929 marking the forty-third anniversary of the Tarawera Eruption. This article relates the Legend of Phantom Canoe.

f) A newspaper cutting from The Evening Post, Monday, June 9, 1930: A Hidden Dawn, Tarawera Eruption, Rain of Sand and Dust, Fear of Tidal Wave. An account of the Tarawera Eruption written by a survivor aged 10 and living in Opotiki at the time of the eruption.

g) A newspaper cutting about the Krakatoa Eruption, August 1883. The article was printed 50 years later in August 1933.
