Brief Description
Published letter from William Colenso to the Native Minister entitled: The Māori Lexicon. The letter was presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by William Colenso and addressed to the Honourable, the Native Minister and is dated 30 August 1873.
The contents of the letter includes: The Māori Lexicon first motioned to the House of Representatives in 1861; in June 1865 a plan or prospectus of the Lexicon was requested; in January 1866, William Colenso received the appointment to execute the work; in 1870 the Government ceased payment for the work. Since that time work on the Lexicon was restricted. Since 1868 Colenso had deteriorating health which contributed to the lack of progress on the Lexicon; present paid engagements also prevented work on the Lexicon; a proposal was put forward to begin publishing the Lexicon in parts.
