The book offers a detailed account of British colonisation of New Zealand from 1839 to 1844. This book was written by Edward Jerningham Wakefield who based it on his own detailed journals from the time.
Significant events such as land purchase ceremonies and the Wairau affray, are reported. There is an analysis of the Treaty of Waitangi, and a chapter devoted to whaling. The text includes many facts including botany and geography: directions to harbours, bays and channels, facts about winds, tides and sailing conditions. Other subjects include: Māori history; territory; iwi and whānau connections, the status of individual people and iwi. The author describes many things which include buildings and fortifications; cooking in a hangi and scraping flax. He explains points of etiquette, and records some speeches made by Chiefs. Māori terms and phrases are used. There is a folding map in a pocket made in the back cover.
