Brief Description
Diary, M D Murphy, Clarence
M D Murphy was the Surgeon Superintendent for the ship Clarence on the trip between London on 24 September 1874 and Hawke's Bay on 5 January 1875. There were 348 emigrants, equal to 296 1/2 adults when the ship set sail.

(a) Diary kept by M D Murphy, Surgeon Superintendent on board the Clarence. It is a daily log of events on the ship, mostly related to the doctors activities, but not exclusively. The diary fills about half the book with the rest of the pages being blank. There is one page, towards the back of the book which has been written on upside down to the rest of the journal. The title is slightly illegible but refers to names of people who have been serviced, and dates. The list includes first and surnames, a date and the name of the ship the person emigrated on.

(b) List of medicines &c for 300 emigrants. Supplied by the Society of Apothecaries, London.

Within the diary is a loose piece of paper which reads: List of medicines &c for 300 emigrants supplied by the Society of Apothecaries, London.
