Brief Description
Immigration list and papers, Gainsborough:
(a) Letter dated 14 November 1877 - to the Immigration Officer, Napier, re - the sailing of the ship, Gainsborough.

(b) Certified list of emigrants bound for Hawke's Bay, dated 3 November 1877. Lists 18 souls equal to 15 1/2 statute adults. Includes first and surnames of emigrants, age and gender, country of origin and occupation.

(c) Register of 18 immigrants on the Gainsborough which sailed from Plymouth on 3 November 1877.

I have a letter dated Dec 12 / 1873 in which my great grandfather was appointed surgeon superintendent of the sailing ship Gainsborough The ship was transporting slaves to Nevis and British Guiana and he was responsible for for the health of the crew as well as the so called emigrants ( slaves) the letter states that would be paid ten shillings sterling for each emigrant that landed alive in the Colonies.
