I have a letter dated Dec 12 / 1873 in which my great grandfather was appointed surgeon superintendent of the sailing ship Gainsborough The ship was transporting slaves to Nevis and British Guiana and he was responsible for for the health of the crew as well as the so called emigrants ( slaves) the letter states that would be paid ten shillings sterling for each emigrant that landed alive in the Colonies.
